Unfortunately, life has again imitated The Onion. The Bush presidency seems to have a very high concentration of events that imitate The Onion. I wonder what that says.

9 Muslim passengers were kicked off an AirTran flight because of a suspicious remark that turned out not to be suspicious at all. While that’s almost understandable, maybe, with no further information, the rest of the story really flabbergasted me. They were kicked off for discussing what portion of the plane was safest in the event of a crash. I don’t know about others, but I’ve certainly had that same conversation on more than one airplane myself over the years. Though google doesn’t turn it up for me now, I remember a movie in the mid-90s where two characters discussed just that; ever since, it’s been a semi-common topic with the flying public. I guess if you’re brown and/or wear a head scarf, you’d best not be nervous about flying.

I really can’t say it any better than this right now. I seldom agree with Newt Gingrich. He’s a sloppy academic, a disgusting, reprehensible human being, and it’s stunning that he is not incarcerated. But he’s right on the money today.

Word on the street is that Verizon is going to stop carrying most of the Usenet. Apparently this is how they plan to implement their settlement with the NY AG. You have to suspect the rest of the mob who’s settling will use similarly coarse filters. With that, at least in the alt hierarchy, September could at last be over. I’m sorry to see it go, for a reason like this anyway.

According to Wired’s Threat Level blog, when questioned about a recent statement by Putin, Bush tried to crack a joke:

Reporter: Mr. President, following up on Vladimir Putin for a moment, he said recently that next year, when he has to step down according to the constitution, as the president, he may become prime minister; in effect keeping power and dashing any hopes for a genuine democratic transition there …

Bush: I’ve been planning that myself.

His joke might be much funnier if his administration hadn’t so aggressive about expanding executive power, with so little regard for the safeguards written into our constitution.
